The best yarn for potholders is going to be one which does not transfer heat. Cotton is the best choice for potholders. Wool is also a great option for crochet potholders. Acrylic and polyester yarns are not suitable for potholders since they can melt when they come into contact with heat.

The potholder has larger hole it is better for sitting hot items on or decoration.

TR – Treble (triple) crochet

Crochet Shell Stitch Potholder Pattern

 
 

 
With blue color, ch 4, join to form a ring (you can use the magic ring if you prefer)
 
Rnd 1:  Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 11 dc into ring, join with sl st. (12 dc) drop blue and join next color.
 
Rnd 2: With Yellow, ch 3, dc in same sp, 2 dc in each dc around, (24 dc) drop yellow.
 
Rnd 3:  With blue, (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *sk 1 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next dc, rep from * around, join. (48 dc) Drop blue.

Rnd 4:  With yellow, attach in any ch-2 sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2,
3 dc) in same sp (shell), * sk 4 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp (shell), rep from * around, join. Drop yellow.
 
Rnd 5:  With blue, attach in any ch-2 sp, ch 3, 5 dc in same sp, *tr bet next 2 shells, 6 dc in next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, end tr bet in last 2 shels, join. Drop blue.
 
Rnd 6: With yellow sc around, join, do not break off.
 
 
HANGER:  Ch 12, sk 6 sc (of potholder), sc into potholder, 16 dc around chain. Fasten off and weave in ends.
