What is the Crochet Wheat Stitch?
The crochet wheat stitch is a beautiful, textured crochet stitch that creates little raised, braided shapes resembling stalks of wheat. It gives crochet projects a cozy, almost woven appearance and looks especially pretty in blankets, scarves, cowls, and pillows.
The Wheat Stitch is Briana K’s signature textured stitch — and for good reason. It looks intricate and braided, like little stalks of wheat woven together, but it’s actually just single crochet + puff stitches.
The magic is in the technique: you skip a stitch, single crochet in the next one, then work a puff stitch back into the stitch you skipped. That little leapfrog backwards is what creates the overlapping, braided V-shape. Its signature overlapping V-shapes create a beautiful braided effect that feels both cozy and refined.

It’s a slow, cozy make and a bit of a yarn eater, but the fabric it creates is the softest, squishiest, most wonderful texture. It works flat in rows and is usually a simple 4-row repeat once you get set up — one of those rows is just single crochet!
Perfect for: blankets, scarves, beanies, tote bags, mug cozies, and fall decor where you want the texture to shine.
How to Crochet the Wheat Stitch
The wheat stitch has a lovely raised texture that makes the stitches stand out. It looks especially attractive in solid colors, such as mustard yellow, cream, sage green, dusty blue, and lavender.
How to Crochet the Wheat Stitch (Step-by-Step)
Skill Level: Confident beginner to intermediate. If you can single crochet and puff stitch, you can do this.
What you need:
- Worsted weight yarn (I love a cream or oatmeal to show the texture)
- 5.0mm – 5.5mm hook
- Stitch markers
Special Stitch – Puff Stitch:
Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a long loop. Yarn over, insert into same stitch, yarn over and pull up another long loop. (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through first 4 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
The Wheat Stitch Pattern:
1. Foundation: Chain an even number. For practice, chain 20.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.
2. The Wheat Row (this is THE row):
Ch 1, sc in first st.
Skip the next st, sc in the next st, then work a puff st into the skipped st.
That is the Wheat Stitch.
Repeat * * across. End with sc in last st. Turn.
Trickiest part? Don’t pull tight! You have to go back to that skipped stitch, so keep your tension loose. Think “leapfrog” — skip forward, then jump back.
3. The Rest Row:
Ch 1, sc in each st across (or blo sc if you want a ribbed border like Briana K does). Turn.
4. Repeat:
Repeat Rows 2 and 3. That’s your 2-row repeat! For her famous Braided Wheat Blanket, the pattern is Rows 9-10 Wheat, Rows 11-12 blo sc.
Tips from my hook:
- Use a stitch marker at the start of each row.
- Work your first row of sc in the back humps for a cleaner edge.
- The stitch uses more yarn than plain sc, so buy one extra skein.

Where can you use this stitch?
The raised texture creates a warm, cozy look that works beautifully for fall and winter blankets.
The stitch adds visual interest without needing multiple yarn colors.
Use it for decorative pillows, table runners, and other handmade accessories.
Is the Wheat stitch difficult to crochet?
It’s generally approachable for crocheters who know basic stitches, although the difficulty depends on the particular wheat stitch pattern. Some versions use puff stitches and single crochet, while others use crossed stitches or front-post stitches. The name can refer to several similar-looking designs.

My tip: Start with medium-weight yarn in a solid color so you can clearly see the raised wheat-like pattern as you crochet.
