MATERIALS
Deborah Norville Collection, Serenity Chunky Weight Yarn
[3.5 ounces, 109 yards (100 grams, 100 meters) per skein]:
Color A #13 Forest – 2 skeins
Color B #01 Almond – 1 skein

Straight knitting needles, size 9 (5.5 mm) or size needed for gauge
Yarn needle
3/4” (19 mm) Buttons – 4
Sewing needle and thread
Fabric for lining (optional)


GAUGE: In Seed Stitch, 13 sts and 26 rows = 4″ (10 cm)SIDE (Make 2)
With Color A, cast on 53 sts.Rows 1-7: K1, (P1, K1) across.Row 8 (Right side – Decrease row): SSK (Figs. 2a-c), K1, (P1, K1) across to last 2 sts, K2 tog(Fig. 1); drop Color A: 51 sts.

Carry unused yarn on wrong side, twisting yarns every other row.

Rows 9-13: With Color B, P1, (K1, P1) across.

Row 14 (Decrease row): SSK, P1, (K1, P1) across to last 2 sts, K2 tog; drop Color B: 49 sts.

Rows 15-42: Beginning with Color A, repeat Rows 1-14 twice: 41 sts.

Rows 43-50: With Color A, K1, (P1, K1) across.

Rows 51-56: With Color B, K1, (P1, K1) across.

Rows 57-64: With Color A, K1, (P1, K1) across.

Bind off all sts in pattern leaving a long end for sewing on one piece only.

Sew sides and bottom seam.

HANDLE (Make 2)

With Color A, cast on 97 sts.Rows 1-8: K1, (P1, K1) across.

Bind off all sts in pattern.

Line Tote and wrong side of Handles if desired.

Using photo as a guide for placement and placing a button on top of each end of each Handle, sew buttons and Handles to top edge of Tote.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
KNIT 2 TOGETHER
(abbreviated K2 tog)
Insert the right needle into the front of the first two stitches on the left needle as if to knit (Fig. 1), then knit them together as if they were one stitch.Fig. 1SLIP, SLIP, KNIT 
(abbreviated SSK)
Separately slip two stitches as if to knit (Fig. 2a). Insert the left needle into the front of both slipped stitches (Fig. 2b) and then knit them together as if they were one stitch (Fig. 2c).
