Potholder Design Instructions
The simple flat design is perfect for beginners and very quick to finish. It’s essentially a fabric “sandwich” that you sew, turn, and quilt.
Materials for a 9″ Potholder
- Fabric: 2 squares of 9.5″ x 9.5″ cotton fabric (allowance for seams).
- Padding: 1 square of Insul-Bright (heat-reflective) and 1 square of cotton batting.
- Loop: A 2″ x 5″ fabric strip.

Simple Flat Design Instructions
- Prep the Loop: Fold your small fabric strip in half lengthwise and press. Open it up and fold the raw edges into that center crease, then fold it in half again so the raw edges are hidden. Stitch along the edge to close the strip.
- Stack the Sandwich:
- Place the batting and Insul-Bright squares on your table.
- Place one fabric square right side up on top of the batting.
- Fold your loop in half to form a “U” shape and place the loop ends at one corner, facing inward toward the center.
- Place the second fabric square right side down on top.
- Sew: Pin the layers and sew around all four sides with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch gap in the middle of one side for turning.
- Turn & Close: Trim the corners (be careful not to cut the stitches!) to make them sharp. Pull the fabric through the gap so the right sides are facing out. Press it flat with an iron.
- Finish: Topstitch 1/4″ away from the edge all the way around; this will close the gap you used for turning. To keep the batting from bunching, sew a simple large “X” or several vertical lines across the middle.
