Crochet Hat Pattern
Brim
- With Color A (teal): Chain 9.
- Row 1: Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each chain across (8 sc). Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the back loop only in each stitch across (8 sc). Turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures the circumference of your head.
- Bring the two short ends together and slip stitch across to join, forming a circle.
Body of the Hat
- With Color A (teal): Attach yarn to the top edge of the brim. Work 1 row of sc around the brim, evenly spacing stitches. Join with a sl st.
- Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Row 2: Ch 2, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch; repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st.
- Change to Color B (orange): Ch 2, dc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Change to Color C (pink): Ch 2, dc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Switch to Color A (teal): Repeat Rows 1 and 2 in Color A.
Top of the Hat
- Continue alternating colors (teal, orange, pink) for about 4-5 rounds, following a similar pattern of dc rows and alternating front and back post stitches for texture.
- Decreasing for the Crown: Begin decreasing by working dc2tog around for 1-2 rows, then sc2tog until you can pull the yarn tightly to close the top.
Pom-Pom
- Use all three colors together to create a pom-pom.
- Attach the pom-pom securely to the top of the hat.
How to Make a Pom Pom with Yarn
Materials
- Yarn
- Scissors
- A fork or your fingers (for a small pom-pom) or a piece of cardboard cut to the desired width (for a larger pom-pom)
Pom Pom Instructions
- Wrap the Yarn:
- If using a fork, wrap the yarn around the tines multiple times until you have a thick amount.
- If using your fingers, wrap the yarn around 3-4 fingers.
- For larger pom-poms, wrap the yarn around a piece of cardboard.
- Tie the Center:
- Carefully slide the yarn off the fork, fingers, or cardboard.
- Cut a separate piece of yarn (about 6 inches) and tie it tightly around the middle of the bundle. Make a double knot to secure it.
- Cut the Loops:
- Insert your scissors into the loops on both sides of the bundle and cut through them to create the ends of the pom-pom.
- Shape the Pom-Pom:
- Fluff up the pom-pom and trim any uneven ends to create a round shape.
- Attach:
- Use the yarn tail from tying the center to attach the pom-pom to your project.
And that’s it—you have a pom-pom! Adjust the number of wraps for a fuller pom-pom if desired.
