Materials

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • inc: increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)
  • dec: decrease (single crochet two stitches together)
  • st: stitch
  • rep: repeat

Cuff

  1. Using Green Yarn:
    • Ch 36 and join with a sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
    • Rounds 1-6: Work 1 sc in each st around. Join with sl st at the end of each round. (36 sts)

Leg

  1. Switch to Red Yarn:
    • Rounds 7-9: Work 1 sc in each st around. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
  2. White Stripe:
    • Round 10: Work 1 sc in each st around using white yarn. Join with sl st. (36 sts)
  3. Repeat Color Pattern:
    • Alternate 3 rounds of red with 1 round of white for a total of 16 rounds. End with a red stripe.

Heel

  1. Switch to Green Yarn:
    • Divide the 36 sts into two halves (18 sts for the heel and 18 for the instep).
    • Work back and forth in rows on the heel half only:
      • Row 1: Sc across 18 sts, ch 1, turn.
      • Row 2: Dec 1 st at the beginning and end of the row (16 sts). Ch 1, turn.
      • Row 3: Repeat Row 2 (14 sts).
      • Row 4: Repeat Row 2 (12 sts).

  2. Re-form the round by working along the edges of the heel rows, joining to the instep sts. Work one round of sc across all sts (36 sts).

Foot

  1. Continue working in rounds using red, alternating 3 red rounds with 1 white round, until the foot measures about 6 inches from the heel.

Toe

  1. Switch to Green Yarn:
    • Begin decreasing for the toe:
      • Round 1: (Sc 4, dec 1) around. (30 sts)
      • Round 2: (Sc 3, dec 1) around. (24 sts)
      • Round 3: (Sc 2, dec 1) around. (18 sts)
      • Round 4: (Sc 1, dec 1) around. (12 sts)
      • Round 5: Dec around. (6 sts)
    • Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use the tapestry needle to weave through the final 6 sts and pull tight to close.

Hanging Loop

  1. Using Red Yarn:
    • Attach yarn to the top of the cuff.
    • Ch 20, sl st back into the same st to form a loop.
    • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finish your Christmas Stocking

Weave in all loose ends with the tapestry needle.
