This lovely Granny Square afghan was originally featured in an Old Woman's Day Magazine
from the 60's or 70's. Afghan is approximately 600 squares joined together.
Pattern for Afghan
SIZE: As shown, approximately 60″ by 90″
MATERIALS: Knitting worsted
, nine 4 oz. skeins M(ain) C(olor), nine 4 oz. skeins of varied colors of your choice, or comparable amount of leftover knitting worsted.
Crochet hook size F or G, or size required to crochet to gauge.
GAUGE: Each square is approximately 3″ by 3″.
NOTE: Afghan as shown is made of 600 squares. Vary colors on first and second round at random, according to your taste. The third round always remains the same (MC).
SQUARE: Ch 5 with first color, join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, * ch 2, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * twice more, end ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3. Fasten off.Rnd 2: Join second color in corner. In ch sp in corner work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1, * (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch sp, ch 1, repeat from *, end sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3. Fasten off.Rnd 3: Join MC in corner. In ch sp in corner, work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1, * 3 dc in next ch, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch sp in corner, ch 1, repeat from * around, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3. Fasten off.
FINISHING: Sew or crochet squares together in rows of 20 squares across.
Join 30 rows together to form afghan.
To crochet 2 squares together, work from the wrong side, inserting the crochet hook through the back loops of the stitches and slip stitch them together.
