For all
you newcomers this is only a temporary problem. You will be surprised
how quickly you can catch on to the printed instructions. The
following are a few tips to get you on the right track. They helped me
when I was beginning and to this day I am still learning more every
day.
Crochet directions are written in abbreviated form. Each stitch has
its own abbreviation. If you turn to the stitch guide in any crochet
magazine or book you will find a comprehensive list of stitch
abbreviations. All good needlework magazines and books include a
how-to page and list of what the abbreviations mean. Try to become
familiar with them before you attempt to read your directions. Use it
as a reference tool while you are crocheting the piece.
Here's an example: Commas and semicolons isolate steps you must
take on a particular round or row.
Asterisks (*) signify a repeat in a row or a round.
Parentheses () and brackets [ ] in the directions indicate that you
must repeat everything inside them the total number of times called
for before you go on to the next step.
Take your time and be patient. Even the most experienced crocheters
have had to start over with their project before getting it right.
Relax and have fun crocheting!
