Free Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Nothing says cozy and comfort like a Granny Square Afghan.
This free pattern is easy to make in your favorite colors.  8" squares make it easy to crochet and assemble together.  Another great thing about making granny squares is that you can take them along with you any where you to and make them while you wait.

Size: 45" x 53"
Materials:
Yarn: Patons D├ęcor (3.5-oz/100-gr skein 75% acrylic/25% wool worsted-weight yarn): 8 skeins Periwinkle 1641 (MC), 2 Nautical 1711 (E), and 1 each Pale Coralberry 1650 (A), Pale Aqua 1610 (B), Pale Olive 1607 (C) and Rich Periwinkle 1642 (D); to mail-order, call Herrschners Yarn Shop toll-free 800-441-0838
Crochet hook: Size G/6 (4.00mm) or size that gives you the correct gauge

GAUGE
Block 8"; granny center 5".
Instructions:

GRANNY SQUARES

Make 30: 8 color A, 6 each B and C, and 10 D.
Starting at center, ch 5; sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 4 (always counts as first tr), work 3 tr in ring, (ch 3, 4 tr in ring) 3 times, hdc in top of ch-4 to join rnd (four 4-tr groups made). Do not turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 4, 3 tr in sp formed by hdc joining, ch 2, *(4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr, ch 2) for corner in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * around, end 4 tr in first sp, hdc in top of ch 4 (eight 4-tr groups made). Do not turn.
Rnd 3: Ch 4, 3 tr in joining sp, ch 2, (4 tr, ch 2) in next ch-2 sp, *(4 tr, ch 3, 4 tr, ch 2) in ch-3 corner sp, (4 tr, ch 2) in next ch-2 sp; repeat from * around, end 4 tr in first sp, ch 3, join with sl st in top of ch 4 (twelve 4-tr groups). Fasten off.

SQUARE BORDERS
Lay out granny squares by color, face up as in the Assembly Diagram, below.
First square border:
Rnd 1: From wrong side, join MC in first tr of center group on any side of square 1. Ch 1, sc in same tr as joining, ch 1, sk next tr, sc in next tr, ch 1, sc in ch-2 sp, ch 1, *sc in next tr, ch 1, sk 1 tr, sc in next tr, ch 1; in corner work sc, ch 1, sc, ch 2 and (sc, ch 1) twice all in ch-3 sp, [(sc in next tr, ch 1, sk 1 tr) twice, sc in ch-2 sp, ch 1]; repeat bracketed sequence once; repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc (12 sc each side).
Rnds 2 through 8: Turn. Sc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp around, working (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in each ch-2 corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off after Rnd 8.
Second square border: Work 7 rnds as for first square.
Rnd 8: Turn. Work to third corner of square.
Joining: With wrong sides together, hold finished square in back; sc in ch-2 corner sp of front square; sl st in corner sp of back square, ch 1, sc in corner sp of front square, sl st in next ch-1 sp of back square, *sc in next ch-1 sp of front square, sl st in next ch-1 sp of back square; repeat from * to next corner; sc in ch-2 sp of front square, **sl st in corner sp of back square, ch 1; on front square, sc in corner sp, ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, then complete Rnd 8 as before.
Third, fourth and fifth square borders: Work and join as for second square.
Sixth square border: Work 7 border rnds, then Rnd 8 to second corner. Join (as for second square) to lower edge of first square; complete Rnd 8. Seventh square border (join 2 sides): Work border and join as for sixth square to lower edge of second square, working to ** of Rnd 8; then sl st tog corner sp of front square and joining of back squares, ch 1, sc in same corner sp of front square, sl st in next ch-1 sp of next back square (6).
Continue from * of Rnd 8 to join second side and complete rnd.
Eighth through thirtieth borders: Work and join as for sixth or seventh squares as needed.
